Sylvia Pickel (Cyndi Lauper) and Nick Deezy (Jeff Goldblum) are two psychics hired by Harry Buscafusco (Peter Falk) to find his son who went missing in Ecuador. The two psychics had met earlier in a scientific study on psychic power. Sylvia can communicate with a spirit guide and Nick is a pyschometrist, who can see the history of something by touching it.
After arriving in Ecuador, they discover that Harry has deceived them and they get caught up in an adventure that is bigger than they could have possibly imagined and may reveal a power even greater than their own.
Lauper and Goldblum lead a cast that stars several familiar faces. Julian Sands, Steve Buscemi and Elizabeth Peña all appear in small roles in the film.
Lauper’s Syvlia is obsessed with finding a man that will treat her right and Goldblum’s Nick is tired of being used for his power by the people at the museum where he works. He is also a bit neurotic. The comedy, acting and Cyndi’s wardrobe are nowhere close to being subtle, but it works.
Vibes isn’t a great movie, but it is a fun one. It fits in that supernatural/comedy subgenre with movies like The Golden Child and High Spirits. if you are a fan of those movies or fans of the two leads, give Vibes a chance.
